Three Paths to Inspiration

Carrie Davenport

How blessed is an artist to have been endowed with the creativity and ultimately the ability to produce a satisfying visual image. It is an enormously unique and individual process. Painters come to their canvases with very diversified backgrounds, life experiences, educational opportunities and artistic training. Bringing together this accumulation is their personal history.  It flows through each artist onto a canvas creating the interesting and sometimes amazing differences seen in the art world.

Propelled by the love of art and what an artist does with it begins the process of honing skills and learning the nuances and control of the medium.  Knowledge and experience free one for experimentation.

I still  come to the easel with joy and anticipation and a clear mental image of what the finished painting is to be. But the direction this piece will take does not always adhere to that image. All the best planning is subject to continual reinvention. Perhaps it is a spiritual force redirecting the process. But if an artist is willing to go with it, the unexpected occurrences happening on the canvas  allow for the possibility of expanded insight and new creativity.
